Day 63 - Sat 17 May 08
Well, they are nothing if not well organised, at the bus stop there's an accommodation office (that's open at 05:00!), with photos of all the places to stay on the walls. You choose what you like the look of, and the bloke behind the desk rings them for you! I chose the first cheap place that caught my eye, 30L for a room with a shower, so I get the guy to ring. Success, they have a room and this is dispute it being a holiday in Turkey and the place being packed with tourists.
The group of six Australians aren't having quite as much luck getting a room. After a few minutes a car appears and I'm whisked the 300m to the hotel. My room is a little basic but it does have a toilet and a shower. I have a bit of a kip until 09:00, and then I nip out to see what other rooms are available. I'd like to stay in a real chimney room. A lot of the hotels are all booked up, but I do find a gem of a room for Monday for €25. The same hotel is offering a tour for 60L, so I decide to take that as well.
I spend the day wandering around this very pretty village and booking train tickets. I've decided to skip Ankara as there's not much too see there.
It's really weird to be back in such a touristy place, and how quickly you can migrate between some place with no tourist infrastructure to one where you can get anything you might want, including a book shop with a good selection of Lonely Planet's!
Göreme is an interesting place it has at least three personalities :-
Walked out of town and climbed a hill to view the sunset, got chatting to a Japanese girl and ended up have a meal and a beer together.
The room in my hotel is so cold, I end up filling old plastic coke bottles with hot water from the bathroom to use as a version of a hotel water bottle.
